95 total capacityIlford Park Polish Home provides residential and nursing care for former members of the Polish Forces who served under British command during World War II and their spouses. Following the war, many Polish soldiers could not return to their homeland due to Soviet control, with many fearing political imprisonment. Recognizing their significant contributions, the British government, led by Winston Churchill, promised support for these veterans. The Polish Resettlement Act of 1947 allowed for the establishment of 45 resettlement camps across the UK, including Ilford Park.
Initially opened in 1948 at Stover Camp, Ilford Park has transformed over time from a resettlement facility into a nursing home for elderly Polish veterans, fostering a community that upholds Polish values. It is known as "Little Poland" by its residents and locals. Many residents are those who struggled to adapt after moving from resettlement camps. The original home became rundown, prompting the government to commit to building a new facility, which opened in December 1992 and accommodates 98 residents across various living arrangements.
Ilford Park aims to provide a culturally sensitive environment, offering bilingual staff to support residents who may revert to Polish as they age. The home adheres to the standards set by the Care Quality Commission and the Health and Social Care Act 2008, with inspection reports available online. It collaborates with various Polish organizations and offers facilities such as a Polish delicatessen, a chapel, and accommodations tailored to residents' needs.
The home features high-standard furnished accommodation, leisure activities, a residents' committee, newsletters, Polish satellite TV, and diverse meal choices. Further information and application forms can be obtained directly from the home’s management.
